I’ve just come off of performing a night at the Hard Rock Casino with The Rock Steadies, and it’s reminded me of how satisfying it is to work with a tight horn section.
I’m so fortunate to get to work with great sections – from the last few days, a two horn section with Ed Lister on trumpet and myself on tenor/baritone saxophone, to five and six piece sections.
When the articulation, phrasing, and tone lines up between all of the players, it’s magical, powerful, and the music seems easier. It’s hard to describe, but it’s almost like a calm or relaxed intensity.
It’s definitely one of my favourite musical situations to be a part of.
