My practicing changes frequently, based on my upcoming gigs, my interests at the time, and reminders of lessons past. Here’s what I’ve been working on in August 2026.
- Musicals – I’ve been prepping for my roles in the upcoming musicals. I’m performing in The Great Gatsby at the National Arts Centre – lots of exposed clarinet solos, and I’m getting a solid workout in the key of D flat major, and New Life, an original musical by James McGowan, where I’m performing in a number different styles on bass clarinet and tenor saxophone.
- A cappella Jazz Standards – I have been going through standard jazz repertoire that I know, and playing it a cappella. This is something that I work on regularly while I’m learning tunes, and having a break from a busy gig schedule allows me to review and internalize some of my favourite songs. Being able to play with good time, phrasing, note choice, and solid lines a cappella lets me know that I can play these tunes with a rhythm section with confidence.
- Mindset – I performed with Bobby Previte at the Ottawa Jazz Festival this year. I was so fortunate to be the bass clarinetist in his band for his interpretation of Miles Davis’, Bitches Brew. I have been trying to practice playing in the moment more, and embracing my in-the-moment improvisation – committing to the idea at the time. I have been using drones, Drum Genius, and iReal Pro to lay a foundation while I commit to an idea, whether it is strong or otherwise, and more times than not, I can create something that works after chasing the idea down.
